The history of General Tso’s Chicken

I just came across this story (http://goo.gl/EbqP) today, and given my name, and given that I fancy myself a bit of a foodie, who could resist? (Not that I considered the deep-fried, dunked-in-sugar-syrup mess that passes for General Tso’s chicken in most fast food Chinese restaurants to be gourmet food

Can You Design a Better Linux T-shirt than Us?

Today we launched a new initiative at the Linux Foundation: a merchandise store on Linux.com. These aren’t logo Ts that you get at every trade show (and probably use to dry your car.) The T-shirts, mugs, stickers and babies gear in the Linux.com store are truly unique and hopefully capture the irreverence, wit and attitude of Linux and free software. My personal favorites:

How to Learn Embedded Linux (For Free Again)

In the past few years, the use of Linux in embedded devices has skyrocketed. Televisions, phones, cars, ATMs: you name it, it probably has Linux running in it. At the recent Mobile World Congress, Linux dominated virtually every product announcement: Samsung’s Bada, many new Android phones, the Linux Foundation’s MeeGo project, Palm, and many more. Embedded Linux today has been nearly as disruptive as Linux was in the data center in the 90s and 2000s as it displaced proprietary Unix OSes.

Built to last

It has now been almost exactly five years since kernel development community tentatively started using the git source code management system with the 2.6.12-rc2 commit. That was an uncertain time; nobody really knew how long it would take the development process to get back up to speed after an abrupt core-tool change. As it turned out, git was almost immediately useful, and has only become more so since. Making the development process work is git’s main claim to fame, but, as a side benefit, git also makes it possible to learn a lot about how our kernel is developed.

Microsoft/Amazon Deal: Nothing to See Here

Microsoft today issued a news release to announce a patent cross-license agreement with Amazon. And, the news release, in the lead, explicitly calls out a set of technologies covered by the agreement: the Kindle, which employs open source software, and Amazon’s use of Linux-based servers.

A Big Victory for F/OSS: Jacobsen v. Katzer is Settled

At 9:00 AM EST today, the parties to Jacobsen v. Katz filed a settlement agreement with the U.S. Federal District Court for the Northern District of California. In doing so, they brought an end to one of the most important legal cases to date affecting the continued success of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The terms of the settlement mark a complete victory for Jacobsen.

Please Welcome MeeGo

I don’t usually post twice a day, but today was opening day in Barcelona of the Mobile World Congress, the biggest mobile show of the year, and the announcements were popping thick and fast. One of those announcements unveiled a new mobile platform called MeeGo - a new open source contender in the race to power the broad array of devices that are rapidly proliferating in the mobile marketplace. And, I’m happy to say, MeeGo will be hosted by The Linux Foundation. We’ve been working for some time on this, and we’re very pleased that the project has now gone pub

The Alexandria Project, Chap. 5: So how do ya like them iBalls?

In which Frank exposes The Truth about venture capital, and the secret of the Perpetual Kitten.

Excerpt:

“Frank snorted with derision. iBalls! What a lame concept! He thought he’d seen everything during the madness of the Internet bubble years – companies formed to sell dogfood over the Internet; year-old startups spending millions on 30 second Super Bowl ads; companies going public without a dollar in sales. After the bust, he had assumed it would be decades before high tech saw that type of insanity again.

Bringing the Magic to Linux with MeeGo

Bringing the Magic to Linux with MeeGo

A few weeks ago, I wrote that the Linux Foundation was going to put its money where its mouth is in order to create more “magic” on Linux. Today the Linux operating system market just got a lot more interesting with the announcement of MeeGo.

CodePlex Foundation Picks Paula Hunter as Executive Director

As you may recall, the CodePlex Foundation indicated in January that it expected to name a permanent Executive Director within a few weeks’ time. That has now happened, and in the “small world” department, the new ED happens to be Paula Hunter - someone I’ve known for years, and worked with several times in the past. The full press release is below. Paula is someone I like and respect a lot, and a great choice for CodePlex.

…Sure enough, as Frank strode up the half-lit corridor in Cube City, there was Rick standing next to his cubicle, coffee cup in hand. His face lit up as soon as he saw Frank. “Morning, Frank,” he called out. “Recovered from your big Saturday night yet?” He raised his coffee cup in a mock toast and leaned casually against his cube so Frank could barely squeeze past.

Linux can compete with the iPad on price, but where’s the magic?

Yesterday I watched Apple’s Steve Jobs unveil the iPad. Jobs clearly can create revolutionary products; he can also produce spin like no one else. Yesterday was no exception.

His main message about the iPad was “a magical device at a breakthrough price.” He repeated this many times throughout the pitch and twice at the end. This phrase demands an honest response: how will Linux-based devices compete with the iPad?

How To Learn Linux From the Developers of Linux. (For Free.)

The Linux community is a pyramid. The base is comprised of millions of Linux users and system administrators. The second level is programmers who work with Linux; some of those developers contribute to the kernel, many do not. The top rung of the pyramid is the thousand or so kernel developers and maintainers who actively contribute to the kernel or other projects that make up a distribution. These are the leaders whose code and ideas shape the system that users and sys adminswork with everyday.

The Importance of Legal Innovation

Open source software development is innovative and exciting. It has produced the software that runs the internet; Linux, Apache, Firefox, and so much more. In addition to being technically innovative it also has turned business models on their head and introduced new software licensing and IP sharing concepts.

As we continue to innovate at the technical level it is equally important to discuss innovative legal concepts to allow the unfettered deployment and development of free and open source software.

Microsoft to Mobile Customers: Choice is a Bad Thing (and Linux will Lose)

Last week, David Coursey reported that Microsoft entertainment and devices boss Robbie Bach made the prediction in an analyst briefing that Linux on mobile will lose. Why? It’s choice is a bad thing for customers and that there is too much Linux in the mobile marketplace

By Bach’s count there are 17 variants of Linux available on mobile phones. He sees this as a bad thing for customers. We, unsurprisingly, see this as a bad thing for Microsoft.

Hundreds of Jobs Posted on Linux.com

With Linux powering nearly every mobile device that hits the market, the demand for Linux-related jobs is rapidly growing despite national unemployment figures. Combine this with the ongoing success of companies such as Red Hat and it’s easy to see why demand for Linux professionals is on the rise.

That’s why today Linux.com is adding an important function that will connect job seekers, employers, and recruiters.

Another Area of Linux Growth

Thanks to tech like Moblin and Android, netbooks, smartbooks, and smartphones are all the rage right now for consumers, but Linux is also showing up on the very sales counters where all of these devices are being bought.

While there's no denying the rise of Linux on these consumer systems, there's been a rather quiet but steady rise in Linux deployments on point-of-service (or point-of-sale) systems.

Retail systems are an interesting niche for Linux... one where the free operating system has historically done well.

When One Linux Project Wins, All Linux Triumphs

To say there was a lot of Linux news coming out of CES last week was an understatement. As I watched the morning TV shows present their inevitable "look-at-what-the-nerds-have-made-this-year" segments from the CES floor during the event, I had the distinct pleasure of turning to my family many times and proclaiming: "See that?

Earlier this week, I noted the fact that the 100 day mark for the CodePlex Foundation had passed (on December 19) without any comment from the Foundation on how they had fared against their aggressive goals for that time period, including the replacement of the founding, interim Board of Directors, with a permanent board.

There's been a lot of technology predictions for the upcoming year, with Linux playing a big part in the future direction of tech.
Nouveau: A 2.6.33 Surprise

Linus has released the 2.6.33-rc1 prepatch, closing the merge window for this development cycle. This kernel has a few features which will shake things up, with dynamic tracing being near the top as far as I am concerned. But, perhaps, the most interesting addition is one that almost nobody expected: a reverse-engineered driver for NVIDIA graphics chipsets called “Nouveau.”

A Concise Introduction to Free and Open Software

If you’re like me, you became fully aware of free and open source software only gradually, rather than suddenly and all at once. In my case, the process was somewhat schizophrenic, because I was personally involved, through my clients, in some of the evolutionary steps of FOSS itself, and only realized in retrospect how they fit into the whole picture.

Shuttleworth Stepping Down as Canonical Head, Silber New CEO in 2010

After five years as CEO of Canonical Ltd., Mark Shuttleworth is stepping down from that role, as current Canonical COO Jane Silber steps up as the new executive leader of the popular Linux distribution vendor.

The changeover is starting now, and will be effective on March 1, 2010.

Outside observers might get more than a little jolt at the news, but in reality Shuttleworth and Silber have shared many of the same responsibilities leading Canonical since Silber joined the company in 2004. This shift represents a definite change, but not a radical one.

2010 Linux Events Foster Community, Business Opportunities

The technology event season has come to a close, as the holidays approach and 2009 draws to its end.

This was a great year for events in the Linux community. Several regional Linux and open source shows filled the calendar around the world, so most Linux enthusiasts got a chance to visit at least one event near them. There were also the big shows, like OSCON, Open Source World, CeBIT, and, of course, LinuxCon, which came off as an unqualified success for the Linux Foundation.

Browser Shares Reveal True Benefits of Open Source

There was a good story on Ars Technica last week about the current state of browser share on the Internet. Browser news is always interesting because it gives us one window into how far open source has come on the desktop.

Chrome OS Sparks Vendor Enthusiasm, Innovation

Some of you might be too young to remember the space race: the frenzied decades of the '50s and '60s where the US and the USSR poured massive resources to be the First [Anything] in space. But all of us might have a chance to watch some of this in microcosm as OEM vendors jockey for the coveted "first Chrome OS netbook shipped" position.

Putting Trust in the Cloud

If you have any gold in your portfolio, then you are indeed a fortunate soul. With gold at an all-time high, upwards of US$1,100 per Troy ounce, lots of people with this precious metal are feeling quit flush right now.

No need to look at the URL field; you haven't accidentally landed on an investment site. Trust me, I'm the last guy you want money advice from. But something's going on with the gold market right now that could be analogous to a potential problem with cloud computing.

Open Source Gets Bigger CeBIT Spotlight

The strong growth of open source in IT will be demonstrated with its prominent placement at the world's largest computer event, CeBIT 2010.

That's the news coming out of Hannover, Germany the permanent home for the CeBIT show, where the CeBIT Open Source 2010 event will be taking center stage at one of the largest expo halls according to show organizers Deutsche Messe. According to Britta Wülfing, CeBIT Event Manager, the shift of the Open Source exhibition to the more prominent Hall 2 is a direct response to the huge popularity this segment of the show enjoyed in 2009.

Over the next ten years, tens, and possibly hundreds of millions, of new platforms are going to be put into place in the United States as part of a new national infrastructure; an equal number will be installed in Europe (many are already being installed). The same may happen in other parts of the world as well.

Cox, Gleixner, Ts'o Elected to Technical Advisory Board

Besides excellent sessions and networking opportunities, there's usually behind-the-scenes action going on at our many events: meetings and get-togethers for any one, and sometimes several, of our working groups and teams. The Linux Foundation (LF) staff and members are scattered around the world, so using our events for valuable face time is a necessity.

One of the more important functions is the annual Technical Advisory Board (TAB) election, which was held this year at the Japan Linux Symposium in Tokyo. Today, we've announced the results of that election.

Cross-Platform Coding for Visual Studio Developers via Mono

One of the big challenges facing Linux development is the straightforward issue of actually having developers to write the code.

As more academic and vocational training centers add curriculum that includes programming for Linux and free software projects, this has become less of a problem in recent years. But training new developers takes time, and meanwhile there's a huge resource of existing Windows developers out there who could very easily switch to Linux or add Linux development to their skillsets.

The Importance of an Open Internet

The concept of net neutrality is an issue that's been bandied about for a few years now in the US--among several other political hot potatoes you have probably heard about.

Being against net neutrality is one of those arguments that on first glance seems reasonable. The power company, after all, charges us more as we consume more electricity--why shouldn't Internet carriers be allowed to charge based on dataload and regulate traffic accordingly?

Digitization and the (Vanishing) Arts of the Book

It’s easy to appreciate the wonders of the Web, and all of the riches that the Internet brings into our lives. All of which makes it easy indeed not to notice the things that tend to slip away, as the collateral damage of progress. Recently, we woke up to the fact that if we don’t care about document formats, our personal and public documents may disappear into a digital Black Hole of no return.

The Constantine Code and the Missing Standard!

[start over; no one else thinks about standards much at all]

Ahem. One of the things that standards folks must come to terms with is the fact that on the rare occasions when anyone else thinks about standards at all, likely as not it’s to observe that standards are…

A Tokyo Travelogue

So I’ve just returned from Tokyo, where I attended the 2009 Kernel Summit and the first ever Japan Linux Symposium. My body clock is expected sometime later this week. It was a tiring but rewarding week, and not just because the sushi was so good.

The Kernel Summit went well. There are not a whole lot of earthshaking decisions to report from there; the real news seems to be that the process is working quite well despite the record pace of change and no serious changes are required.

Cloud Computing Too Costly in the Long Term?

Watch the 2009 Linux Plumbers Conference

Right after LinuxCon this year was the co-located Linux Plumbers Conference. This is not an official Linux Foundation event, per se, but we work closely with the organizers to help them any way we can. It's a great event for system and kernel developers to attend, and this year was no exception.

LinuxCon: Keynote, Session Videos Available Now

While there's little substitute for actually attending an event, so many things were said and done at this year's LinuxCon, we had to get videos of the event out for public viewing as soon as we could.

So, thanks to the fantastic work from the crew over at Linux Pro Magazine, videos are available from nearly all sessions of LinuxCon.

Red Hat Files New Brief in Software Patent Case

The fight against software patents got a big boost yesterday when one Linux company filed an amicus brief with the US Supreme Court urging it to uphold last year's Bilski vs. Doll decision in the Federal appeals court.

Further Reflections on the CodePlex Foundation: The Glass Half Full

Two weeks ago, I wrote an analysis of the governance structure of the CodePlex Foundation, a new open source-focused foundation launched by Microsoft. My opinion, as expressed in that piece, was that significant changes (which I outlined) would need to be made to the Foundation before it would be taken seriously by Microsoft’s competitors, and more especially, by individual open source developers.

LinuxCon 2009 Wrap-Up: The Continuing Benefits

The first LinuxCon may be over, but the knowledge and community shared at the conference will be around for a long time.

Expert sessions, informative keynotes, and multiple opportunities to kick back and socialize with Linux consumers of all stripes--these marked the flavor for LinuxCon. Attendees appreciated the balance of learning and information they got from the sessions--feedback from those I (unscientifically) surveyed was overwhelmingly positive, and I was asking for all comments, not just the good.

Some of the highlights of the conference include:

LinuxCon: Shuttleworth's Three Methods to Improve FOSS Development

Cadence, quality, and design were the core themes of Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth's closing keynote talk at LinuxCon.

Speaking before a combined session of LinuxCon and the co-located Linux Plumber's Conference, Shuttleworth drilled home the importance of these concepts in the Linux development ecosystem, particularly cadence.

The Cloud and Future Innovation: Nuclear Winter or New Opportunity?

Last night, I had the distinct pleasure of speaking at the monthly Fort Wayne, IN LUG meeting. Apparently, they thought I knew something about Linux. It did not take me long to prove them wrong.

Traveling in real time

So I am hitting the road next week. It should be no surprise that LinuxCon and the Linux Plumbers Conference are coming up. I have a talk (the well-travelled Kernel Report) and the kernel developers’ panel, both on Monday; I fully expect to be tired by the end. There’s a lot of other interesting stuff happening at LinuxCon, which is being held for the first time ever. I’m looking forward to seeing how it comes out.

In the run up to LinuxCon, we’ve sat down with a number of the conference’s keynote speakers. This week it’s IBM’s Vice President of Open Source and Linux Bob Sutor. Bob is kicking off LinuxCon with his keynote, “Regarding Clouds, Mainframes, Desktops and Linux,” and also participating in a panel discussion with Oracle’s Monica Kumar and Adobe’s Dave McAllister on Open Standards and Linux.

The CodePlex Foundation: First Impressions (and Recommendations)

Well, it’s been a busy week in Lake Wobegon, hasn’t it? First, the Wall Street Journal broke the story that Microsoft had unwittingly sold 22 patents, not to the Allied Security Trust (which might have resold them to patent trolls), but to the Open Inventions Network (which might someday assert them back against Microsoft).
